The medicolegal challenges of chronic pain: from diagnosis to treatment

by Dr Rishi Khanna, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management

Chronic pain is extremely common, affecting as many as 20% of adults in the UK at any one time. Chronic pain conditions are amongst the commonest reasons for disablement, with low back and neck pain consistently being the leading causes.

The medicolegal challenges of spinal cord stimulation for the treatment of pain

Current treatment options for chronic pain are limited in terms of their efficacy, particularly over the long term. Recent research indicates that neuromodulation, including spinal cord stimulation, may offer genuine hope to patients with chronic neuropathic pain.

Chronic primary pain: what is it and what are the medicolegal challenges?

Primary pain is defined as pain that occurs in the absence of, or is disproportionate to, any clearly defined injury or underlying condition. It is deemed chronic when it persists for three months or more.
